  • A float switch is a device used to sense the level of liquid within a tank. The switch may actuate a pump, an indicator, an alarm, or other device.
  • Use them with hydroponics, saltwater tank, freshwater tank, gardening, aquariums for power head control, pet bowls, fish tanks, filtration, heating, pumps, ponds, basement alarms, boats, air condition drain pans, pressure washers, carpet cleaning mach, reef aquarium, fluid control, ice machines, coffee pots, marine, automotive, automobiles, tropical fish tanks, evaporator coils, condensation line, in relays, or what ever your project may be.
  • It can be easily converted from normally open to normally close by invertin the float.
  • Note: because the current that the switch can carry is much little(0.5A), you must use a relay or contactor when it is connected by a load, relay and contactor are not included here.

I have been using these float switches in my saltwater coral reef tank. Other than industrial chemicals, saltwater is probably a worst-case scenario, but the switches have held up pretty good:

1. There is some corrosion on one of my two switches where the wires enter the float body, so you may wish to add another coat of your own sealant in that area before corrosion occurs. Even with the discoloration, the switch still works after four years.

2. After about 18 months, the dabs of white glue that hold the magnets in the float pops up and half of the rusty magnet inside falls out. I reinforced the glue on a replacement float with superglue, but the magnets eventually failed anyway. I think that the float is permeable or porous and salt soaks into the magnets and eats them away from the inside out. If you are not using these for saltwater they may last longer. Still, 18 months is pretty good for an inexpensive switch and I still think these are a reasonable value for the money. I will spray paint all surfaces of my next set of floats to see if that helps.

3. I use my switches to drive a small relay with 12VDC, so they are being loaded to much less than rated maximum amperage. So, as expected, they are still working perfectly, electrically speaking. Although I have gone through many replacement floats due to eventual magnet failure, the original switch bodies are still working great after the entire four years of service.
